How to get more local customers
from being found to being chosen

Posted: 23/09/2026

When someone nearby needs what you sell, will they find your business, recognise it and feel confident enough to get in touch? A useful local marketing plan answers all three questions. You do not need to use every channel at once. Start with the places your customers look, make it easy to judge your business, and give them a clear next step.

Be visible when people are ready to search

Some customers know exactly what they need. They search for a service, often adding their town or “near me”, and compare a handful of options. If your business does not appear at that point, the rest of your marketing has a harder job to do.

Check the words customers actually use, then make sure the relevant page on your website explains the service, the area you cover and how to enquire. Paid search can put an advert in front of people searching for those terms on Google or Bing. It is especially useful when you want to promote a specific service or reach a particular location, provided you track what happens after the click.

Useful check: Search for your main service as a customer would. Does the result lead to a page that answers their question and offers a simple way to contact you?

Build recognition before the customer needs you

Many purchases begin before the search. A person may notice your name in the local news, see a social post, or read about a business in a newsletter. That familiarity can help when they later have a reason to compare providers.

Choose channels for the people you want to reach. Social media is a place to show recent work, answer common questions and share useful updates. Display advertising on local news sites can keep your name visible in the community. Newsletter and print advertising can reach readers through established local publications. A longer native advertising piece can explain your expertise or the story behind a service. Each format has a different job, so match the message to the goal rather than repeating the same advert everywhere.

Useful check: Ask whether a person seeing your advert or post for the first time would understand what you offer, where you work and why they should remember you.

Make your website easy to trust and use

An advert can earn a visit, but the website must help the visitor decide. On a phone, can they quickly find the service they need, see the areas you cover and contact you without hunting through menus? A slow or confusing page can lose an enquiry even when the advertising has reached the right person.

Use plain descriptions, relevant examples of your work and a clear contact route. If you include reviews or case studies, use genuine ones and keep the details current. Make the call to action fit the service: a telephone number may suit an urgent repair, while a short enquiry form may suit a considered purchase. A well structured, mobile friendly website also gives your campaigns a better destination.

Useful check: Open your key page on your phone and try to make an enquiry. Count the steps, then remove any that feel unnecessary.

Choose a few measures that match your goal

If your goal is enquiries, look beyond impressions and clicks. Record calls, completed forms or booked appointments where you can, and note which campaigns brought people to the site. If your goal is local awareness, reach and engagement may be more useful alongside changes in branded searches or direct visits. Review the results regularly, then put more effort into the channels and messages that are helping your business.

The right mix depends on your customers, location and budget. A business with immediate demand might begin with search and a stronger landing page. Another might need to build recognition in its area before people are ready to enquire. Either way, the aim is the same: help local customers find you, understand you and take the next step.
